Description of Position:
I am an evolutionary biologist and my research focuses on integrating genomics, ecological data, and computer modeling to reconstruct the evolutionary histories of species and populations. This work addresses basic questions (e.g. “Why are there so many species?”, ‘How do species adapt to their environment?’) and applied questions (e.g. “How do we delimit and monitor species?”) about the evolution of freshwater and terrestrial organisms. My research on evolutionary processes in biodiversity ‘hotspots’ takes me across the Americas, from the southeastern US to Central America and South America. On-going projects in my lab focus on conservation genomics of threatened and endangered minnow species from central Alabama and the Southern Appalachian Mountains; life history evolution and rapid evolution of intraspecific reproductive isolation in livebearing fish; biomonitoring Alabama freshwater fishes; and predicting responses of Alabama’s coastal dune plant ecosystems to global climate change and sea-level rise. I teach a variety of courses here at JSU, including Introductory Biology I (BY 101), Ichthyology (BY 460), Ecology (BY332), Biodiversity (BY 542), Seminar in Systematics (BY 577), and Biology Internship (BY 397).

Research in the Wilhelm lab focuses on the interactions of microbial communities with the environment and in turn how the environment shapes microbial communities. Scientists at all levels work to resolve the synergies between microbial communities and biogeochemical cycles in lakes and ocean systems around the globe. Lab members use biomolecular tools – DNA and RNA sequencing, metabolomics, and PCR-based quantitative analyses – to study viruses, bacteria, cyanobacteria and algae. Currently the laboratory has a specific focus on virus ecology, toxic cyanobacterial blooms and the development of quantitative molecular tools for microbial ecology.

Description of Position:
My research interests are extremely broad-based and my various skill sets have proven to be useful in a number of ways. My main focus is on the taxonomy and community composition of soil micro- and mesofauna, with emphasis on nematodes, springtails (Collembola) and Protura. Currently I collaborate with colleagues in the U.S., Algeria, Australia and Ukraine on systematics of Collembola, Protura and other hexapods. My lab has high-end light (BF, PC, DIC) microscopes equipped with high-resolution cameras, so we do a ton of imaging that enhances our understanding of what we are viewing and improves the publications we develop.
My colleague Dr. Gary Phillips and I are continuing the first extensive survey of nematodes inhabiting millipede intestines. Nearly every millipede at least 2 mm wide contains nematodes, sometimes exceeding 1,000 in a single intestine. We estimate at least 40 species live in North American millipedes. Most of them are new species and we are actively describing them.
I am also testing fiber and CBD hemp cultivars for susceptibility to root galling by the southern root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita. Because hemp growth was largely banned for the past 80 years, we know little about the effect of this important plant parasite on hemp health.

Description of Position:
Dr. Tuberty teaches Invertebrate Zoology, Ecotoxicology, Fauna of Australasia, Careers in Biological Sciences, Belize Reef and Rainforest Ecology, and the freshman Biological Concepts II courses at ASU. The Tuberty Lab (including high school, undergraduate, & M.S. students) is focused on a great variety of interests related to southeastern ecotoxicology, ecophysiology and aquatic ecology issues. At the root of our efforts is a passion for sustainable management of water resources. In recent years we have worked on the endocrine disrupting effects of sewage effluents on fish, industrial chicken litter soil amendment practices on soil and water quality, and impacts of coal ash spills on water quality and aquatic community assemblages or rates of toxic metal bioaccumulation. We often assess the impacts of local toxin spills (NaOH, coal tar asphalt resealants, coal ash) or remediation projects and the recovery of the streams thereafter and are very involved in the CSETAC regional conference events.
The Tuberty Lab is a member of the AppAqua (Appalachian Aquatic Sciences) interdisciplinary research cluster working to understand the local ecology and impacts of land use change on water resources of the Upper South Fork New River as well as human impacts on other Southern Appalachian headwater streams that form the Catawba, Linville, New, N. Toe, Watauga and Yadkin Rivers which begin in the North Carolina High Country.
The Lab also collaborates with faculty and students from Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences and Department of Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment to develop techniques to remove/degrade toxins from point sources and improve water quality. Members of our lab are dedicated to civic engagement through outreach to local schools, non-profits, and private citizens to educate and provide expertise and resources for water quality assessment. Dr. Tuberty has recently joined Environmental Stewards Consulting, Inc., a non-profit that serves as technical advisor to communities impacted by hazardous waste sites, as a board member and treasurer. Recently, our lab has focused on the impacts of road salts and sewage effluents on S. Appalachian headwater streams. We are finishing efforts on the east TN tailwaters of the South Holston River to better understand the invasive Didymo diatom (aka rock snot) and its impacts on the aquatic community there – an important Blue Ribbon Flyfishingdestination.
Dr. Tuberty is committed to promoting the ASU Strategic plan which among other things focuses on the sustainability efforts across campus as well as building resilient communities.

My principal research area involves studying natural archives of environmental history, for example developing records of past fire, vegetation, and climate from lake-sediment records and soils. I also have some experience in tree-ring analyses of environmental change. In some of my work I collaborate with archaeologists to understand proxy indicators of past environments at archaeological sites.
